Anatomy

What do Anatomy degrees involve?

Anatomy degrees teach you how the human body is structured and how its systems function, providing a foundation for careers in medicine, research, and healthcare. You will explore key areas such as human dissection, neuroscience, musculoskeletal anatomy, physiology, and embryology. These courses help you develop strong analytical, laboratory, and research skills while understanding how the body’s organs, tissues, and systems work together. You will also gain hands-on experience through lab-based dissections, imaging techniques, and research projects. With a focus on both theoretical knowledge and practical application, you’ll graduate prepared for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, and anatomical sciences.

  • Gross Anatomy: Study the human body through dissection, learning the structure and position of muscles, bones, organs and vessels.


  • Histology: Explore tissues under the microscope to understand how cells are organised and how they support body function.


  • Embryology: Examine how the body forms before birth, tracing the development of organs and systems from fertilisation onwards.

Level 3 (A-level / IB Diploma (HL) / Scottish Highers)


Anatomy is about understanding the structure of the human body – from bones and muscles to organs and tissues. Because you'll be studying biological systems in detail and working in laboratories, universities look for strong science foundations.


You'll need:


  • Biology – almost always essential

  • Chemistry – often required or strongly preferred


Subjects that strengthen your application:


  • Maths or Physics – useful for courses with strong lab or data elements

  • Psychology – may be accepted as a second science by some universities


Biology and Chemistry together keep the widest range of options open. If you have Biology plus another science or Maths, you'll still have good options.


Universities may also accept:


  • BTEC Extended Diplomas in Applied Science (being phased out), Engineering, or IT (being phased out), with strong maths/physics content

  • BTEC National Extended Certificates or National Diplomas alongside A-levels that meet the subject requirements above

  • IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) with Biology and ideally Chemistry at Higher Level among your IB subjects (minimum two, ideally three), alongside your Career-Related Study; an Applied Science pathway would be directly relevant


Always check the entry requirements on each university’s website—some may be flexible on combinations or offer alternative routes if you’re missing a subject. 

Level 2 (GCSE / MYP / Nat 5)

Most Anatomy courses require:


  • GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or equivalent qualifications like National 5s or MYP

  • Science – either Combined Science or separate subjects like Biology and Chemistry, usually at grade 4/C or higher (or equivalent)


📘 If you studied PE, Psychology, or Health & Social Care at this level, it can provide helpful context—but science is still the core foundation.
