Astronomy

What do Astronomy degrees involve?

Astronomy degrees teach you about the universe, exploring celestial objects, space phenomena, and the fundamental laws of physics that govern them. In the UK, Astronomy is normally studied alongside another subject, such as Physics, Astrophysics, or Mathematics, to provide a strong scientific foundation. You will explore key areas such as cosmology, planetary science, stellar evolution, observational techniques, and space exploration. These courses help you develop strong analytical, problem-solving, and computational skills while learning how to interpret astronomical data and use telescopes and simulation software. You will also gain hands-on experience through research projects, observatory visits, and data analysis exercises. With a combination of theoretical learning and practical application, you’ll graduate prepared for careers in scientific research, space technology, and data science.

  • Physics of the Universe: Study the forces and laws that govern space, time and matter, from gravity and light to the motion of celestial objects.


  • Stellar Astrophysics: Explore how stars form, shine and die, including how they produce elements through nuclear fusion and end as white dwarfs, neutron stars or black holes.


  • Galactic Dynamics: Investigate the motion of stars within galaxies, the role of dark matter, and how galaxies grow and change over time.

MSci is a four-year integrated Master’s available at several institutions.

Level 3 (A-level / IB Diploma (HL) / Scottish Highers)


Astronomy degrees explore the universe – from planets to galaxies. Usually taught within Physics departments, these courses are highly mathematical and require strong foundations in Maths and Physics.


You'll need:


  • Maths – essential for almost all Astronomy courses

  • Physics – essential or strongly preferred


Subjects that could strengthen your application:


  • Further Maths – highly recommended for theoretical courses

  • Computer Science or Chemistry – useful supporting subjects


  • Maths and Physics together are the foundation you need. If it's available, adding Further Maths (or IB AA HL) keeps the most competitive courses open for you.


Universities may also accept:


  • BTEC Extended Diplomas in Engineering, Applied Science (being phased out), or IT (being phased out), with strong maths/physics content

  • BTEC National Extended Certificates or National Diplomas in Engineering or Applied Science, alongside A-level Maths and usually A-level Physics

  • IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) with Maths and Physics at Higher Level among your IB subjects (minimum two, ideally three), alongside your Career-Related Study - see above for IB subjects that could strengthen your application


Entry expectations and required subjects vary—always check each university’s website for the exact subjects and entry criteria for your chosen course.

Level 2 Qualifications (GCSE / MYP / National 5)


Most courses ask for:


  • GCSE English Language, Maths and Science at grade 4/C or above, or equivalents such as National 5s or MYP

The Planet, the Universe & What's Out There: The whole degree is about understanding what's out there. You'll study how stars form and die, how galaxies move, what cosmology tells us about the origin of the universe, and how telescopes and observations help us read the night sky.


Mathematics, Patterns & Data: Modern astronomy is heavily data-driven. You'll work with telescope images, light curves, spectra and large astronomical datasets, learning how to extract real conclusions about distant objects from the patterns hidden in the numbers that detectors and instruments produce.
