Level 3 (A-level / IB Diploma (HL) / Scottish Highers)

Leisure degrees explore how leisure, sport, tourism, events, and recreation are organised, managed, and experienced. Entry requirements are usually flexible, and universities welcome students from a wide range of subject backgrounds.

Subjects that strengthen your application:

  • Business Studies or Economics – helpful for management, marketing, and finance

  • Travel & Tourism or Geography – great for destination planning and visitor behaviour

  • Physical Education or Sport – useful for sport and recreation pathways

  • Sociology or Psychology – valuable for understanding people and communities

  • Media Studies – relevant if you're interested in leisure marketing or entertainment

✨ You don't need to have studied Leisure before – a mix of essay-based, business, or social science subjects works well and shows you can analyse, plan, and communicate.

Universities may also accept:

  • BTEC Extended Diplomas in Travel and Tourism, Business, or Sport

  • BTEC National Extended Certificates or National Diplomas alongside relevant A-Level subjects

  • T-Levels in Management and Administration or Marketing, other subjects may be considered

  • IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) with at least two IB Higher Level subjects (ideally three) alongside your Career-Related Study; a Sport, Business, or Travel & Tourism pathway would be directly relevant

Course focus varies – some emphasise management, others tourism, sport, or events. Always check specific course requirements.

Level 2 Qualifications (GCSE / MYP / National 5)

Most courses ask for:

  • GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4/C or above, or equivalents such as National 5s or MYP

📘 GCSEs (or equivalents) in Business, Geography, PE, or IT can be helpful, but they aren’t essential.

Running Projects, Events & Ventures: This degree is about running the leisure industry. You'll study how sport and leisure organisations are managed, how facilities like gyms, pools and parks operate day to day, and how marketing, planning and policy shape what gets offered.

Sport, Movement & Physical Performance: The leisure industry is heavily sport-flavoured here. You'll study sport marketing, sport and leisure operations, and applied sport and exercise physiology, looking at how participation, fitness and physical activity are organised and delivered to the public.
