DEGREE GUIDE
Physical Education
What do Physical Education degrees involve?
Physical Education degrees teach you how to promote fitness, health, and wellbeing through sports and physical activity. You will explore key areas such as exercise science, coaching, biomechanics, psychology, and curriculum development. These courses help you develop strong communication, leadership, and practical teaching skills while learning how to design and deliver engaging physical education programmes for different age groups and abilities. You will also gain hands-on experience through school placements, coaching sessions, and sports leadership opportunities. With a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical training, you’ll be prepared for careers in teaching, sports coaching, and health promotion.

BA (Hons) Physical Education and Sport
BA (Hons) Physical Education and Coaching
BA (Hons) Physical Education with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)
Level 3 (A-level / IB Diploma (HL) / Scottish Highers)
Physical Education degrees combine practical activity with an understanding of how the body works and how people learn movement skills. Universities value a mix of sport-related knowledge and academic subjects.
Subjects that strengthen your application:
Physical Education – directly relevant but not always required
Biology or Human Biology – useful for understanding anatomy and physiology
Psychology – helpful for understanding learning, motivation, and behaviour
Sociology – relevant for understanding sport in society and barriers to participation
Sport Studies – practical and theoretical preparation
✨ PE or a sport-related subject is preferred by most courses. Courses with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) usually require interviews, DBS checks, and experience working with young people – see Other Requirements.
Universities may also accept:
BTEC Extended Diplomas in Sport or Sport and Exercise Science
BTEC National Extended Certificates or National Diplomas alongside relevant A-levels
T-Level in Education and Childcare
IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) with at least two IB Higher Level subjects (ideally three) alongside your Career-Related Study; a Sport pathway would be directly relevant
Some PE degrees include Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), allowing you to teach in schools after graduation. Others require a PGCE afterwards. Always check specific course requirements.
Level 2 Qualifications (GCSE or equivalent)
Most courses ask for:
GCSE English Language and Maths (or equivalent) – such as Scottish National 5s, BTEC Level 2, or IB MYP certificates
GCSE Science (or equivalent) – some universities specify this
📋 Courses that lead to Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) typically require GCSE English and Maths at grade 4/C or above (or equivalent). This is a government requirement for teaching.
