DEGREE GUIDE
Sport & Exercise Science
What do Sport & Exercise Science degrees involve?
Sport & Exercise Science degrees teach you how the human body responds to physical activity and how exercise can improve health, performance, and wellbeing. You will explore key areas such as biomechanics, physiology, sports psychology, nutrition, and injury prevention. These courses help you develop strong analytical, research, and practical skills while learning how to assess fitness, enhance athletic performance, and design exercise programmes for different populations. You will also gain hands-on experience through laboratory testing, fieldwork, and industry placements. With a combination of scientific knowledge and practical training, you’ll be prepared for careers in sports coaching, fitness training, rehabilitation, and health promotion.
Common Degree Names
💼 Placement years are widely available, often in performance sport, public health, rehabilitation or education.
🌍 Study abroad is available at many institutions.
BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science
BSc (Hons) Sport Science

BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Psychology
MSci Sport and Exercise Science
MSci is a four-year integrated Master’s degree that combines undergraduate and Master’s level study in one course.
Level 3 (A-level / IB Diploma (HL) / Scottish Highers)
Sport & Exercise Science explores how the body responds to physical activity through laboratory work, data analysis, and understanding human physiology. Universities look for evidence of scientific study.
You'll typically need:
At least one science subject – Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or Physical Education/Sport Science
Subjects that could strengthen your application:
Physical Education or Sport Science – directly relevant
Biology – essential for understanding physiology
Psychology – relevant for sport psychology
Chemistry – useful for understanding nutrition and biochemistry
Maths – helpful for biomechanics and data analysis
✨ At least one science or sport-related subject is required by most courses, but you have flexibility in which one. A combination of Biology and PE/Sport Science is particularly strong.
Universities may also accept:
BTEC Extended Diplomas in Sport, Sport and Exercise Science, or Applied Science (being phased out)
BTEC National Extended Certificates or National Diplomas alongside A-levels that meet the subject requirements above
T-Levels in Health or Science (most relevant to the laboratory and physiological content). Competitive courses may still require specific A-level science subjects
IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) with a science subject at Higher Level among your IB subjects (minimum two, ideally three), alongside your Career-Related Study; a Sport pathway would be directly relevant
Many courses are endorsed by the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), the professional body for the field. Endorsement means the course develops the knowledge and skills expected for graduate sport scientists. Always check specific course requirements.
Level 2 Qualifications (GCSE or equivalent)
Most courses ask for:
GCSE English Language and Maths (or equivalent) – often at grade 4/C or above. Equivalents include Scottish National 5s, BTEC Level 2, or IB MYP certificates
GCSE Science (or equivalent) – sometimes required
📋 Sport and Exercise Science involves understanding data and statistics, so comfortable numeracy is helpful.

Interests that connect well with a Sport & Exercise Science degree
Students who enjoy this degree often share these interests. You don't need to feel strongly about all of them, and interests develop over time. If one or two catch your curiosity, or sound like something you'd like to know more about, that's a good sign.

Sport, Movement & Physical Performance: Sport and exercise is the whole frame of the degree. You'll study how athletes train and perform, how exercise affects the body, and how scientific methods can improve performance or participation.
The Human Body & How It Works: The degree is built on three core sciences: physiology, biomechanics and anatomy. You'll study how the body responds to exercise, how muscles and joints generate movement, and how training changes the body over time.
The Mind & Human Behaviour: Sport psychology sits at the core of the degree. You'll explore motivation, focus and confidence in athletes, how the mind and body interact during performance, and how psychology shapes participation in exercise.
Health, Illness & How People Are Cared For: Exercise science extends into health and rehabilitation. You'll study how physical activity prevents and manages chronic conditions, how exercise supports recovery from illness or injury, and how public health can be improved through movement.
